12:08 pm - New LJ - GO GO GO
Well, I've grabbed a new LJ name - I'll probably just move over there altogether, but right now let's just call it my "blogging from ireland" livejournal. I will attempt to keep up with it for those of you interested in my travels. it's:

So please friend me over there. I'm going to have public entries for fam and such, but all the real friendstuff is going to be set to 'friends only'. There's already an update!

(Yes, I am in Ireland now. Want details? *shoos toward argusepistolary*)

p.s. if someone can recommend a good livejournal layout I can grab from somewhere, please do; I never got the hang of coding for ljs and, anyhow, am going to have too much jobhunting to do to worry about that sort of thing just yet.

10:11 pm - Today:
So where i work is a peninsula, and it has one road in and out. REMEMBER THIS, IT'S IMPORTANT LATER.

Okay, it's important now.

There was an unfortunate accident today, right before i was done my shift, right on the spot where there is no other way in and out of the village where I work aside from swimming. Or boats. Apparently there were Bad Things, rumour says a fatality (ouch) - anyways the replacement bartenders couldn't get in so I had to be there for like, ten-hours-no-breaks.

good points: money. brownie points for not complaining to the people there.

bad points: someone got smushed by a truck I guess. Also, oh man am I tired holy crap.

What was kind of interesting was that the bar was full of people from he village, and people trapped in the village, and also of people who parked on the other side of the barricade and snuck in along the beach, risking arrest, I guess? (One of the busboys went to such lengths to get into work. He was wearing his 'SLACKER' shirt and I couldn't resist pointing out the inherent irony.)

One road in and out: not always good for general accessibility.

other things that happened today: i got my first speeding ticket.

So I was browsing the local used bookstore for something that might accompany me on the plane, and I saw this book peeking out from a shelf:

5:32 pm - Sooo~
This: http://www.octopuspie.com is my new webcomic love. Stick with it: it gets incredibly endearing.

Also, is it bad to look at the news that someone has added a piece of your art from six years ago to their favourites and think, 'you have awful taste'?

In more-real-life-related news, I spent too much energy in anticipation of ireland and my anticipationer broke. i'm now kind of just chilling, as it has ceased to seem real!

this might be bad for Getting Necessary Things Done.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeee i got my new wacom eeeeeeee it's huge and awesome eeeeee! I'm very excited to play with it; it's making my old, tiny graphire look a little sad and - simple.

(guys, it comes with extra pen tips so you can control the 'feel' of the pen on the tablet. How cool is that.)

(If you draw you will know that this is a good thing.)

So the ball's rolling on my Visa (supposedly I do not have to worry about being turned down) and I have my flight booked: October 27th. I won't get into Ireland until the morning of the 28th, though.

So far it's all going by the book - the ticket was slightly cheaper than I thought it would be, I got my insurance, I paid the registration fee.

I've still got a lot of stuff to do (renew credit card, get full driver's license, get a checkup, go to the dentist, seriously clean, seriously organize, pack, make 500 more dollars) BUT -

it's booked and I'm on the path. c:

(I'm thinking I might do a flickr account for Ireland pictures - private, because I am nervy about my pictures being easily accessible to the whole dang internet, but you'd just let me know and I'd invite you to be able to see them or however that works on flickr? Does that sound about right? My laptop's going over with my on the plane; my desktop a couple months later when I have a place.)

10:23 pm - and on a lighter note
[after recommending 'Profit']

Hannah: thanks for reccing. i had it in my epic long queue of things to check out but never would've gotten to it without your input, so~
Amy: all you needed was 'evil adrian pasdar in a suit - naked every episode'
Amy: hell
Amy: every show should have some of that going on.
Hannah: YES. fuck yes. adrian wasn't naked often enough in heroes.
Amy: every time he goes supersonic all his clothes should fly off.

12:06 am - designblind.
Sometimes it makes me a little depressed that a decent portion of the populace seems to be designblind in the same way that some people are colourblind, and should not make decisions about art direction much the same way someone who is colourblind ought to be careful choosing their shirts.

This does not bother me/weird me out nearly as much as when those people are in professional positions and decide to forgo paying a professional designer the money to design something and do it themselves and can't see what an awful awful job they've done of it, even though to some people it just stands out clearly and obviously.

it's just so weird! You don't tend to think of 'design sense' like you think of 'colour sense' or, oh, I don't know, 'good peripheral vision', but some people do seem to be able to look at something and go ACK OH GOD along with me at an unspoken atrocity - and some people look and go, what?

Even after you attempt to explain it (though mostly inadequately as I don't have the words. Most of the time when I share design failure pain with someone, they already see the problem and we can just point at ti and go 'eck that green block is all wrong' or whatever the case may be.)

There should be a quiz on this! Or a psychological study! They'll show you local advertising and you have to rate it 'studio' or 'with photoshop in their home basement*'.

*or the sad third option, 'by a studio but still looks like with photoshop in their home basement'.

Yes, okay: I love google maps' satellite view in part because you can zoom in and see where there's parking around a place.

This is only available free for viewing until midnight this Sunday apparently?

Watch it right now.

And don't turn it off before the singing starts and/or you get to see Captain Hammer.

I like getting gift cards because then I don't feel obligated to save the money.

(Volunteered at the library today - did a workshop for 9-12s about basic cartooning and stuff. Just for fun, etc. The people at the library are so nice, though - they gave me a thank-you card that it looks like someone there may have actually made and a gift certificate for chapters/coles/etc. They are so nice! Are most libraries so full of nice people?)

6:43 pm - Mighty God King ~
Guest blogger:

"When I think of my favorite books and shows and movies, they are usually the ones that reach just a bit further than they’re generally expected to, or handle stories in different ways. Jurassic Park and Quantum Leap spring most immediately to mind, being not so much about dinosaurs and time travel, respectively, as about reactions to those elements."

As about reactions to those elements. Yes: that is pretty much exactly what I love in fantasy and sci-fi.

One thing about not getting home until 3am is that out here in the country in the for-serious dead of night, the starts are /amazing/. It's ridiculous. It is difficult not to gawk while I drive. Just fantastic - there-is-the-milky-way and everything.

In other news, we almost had a barfight.
